the third release on the sister label, new york trax imports, comes from the legendary dutch producer and founder of one of the most eclectic underground record labels, vincent koreman aka drvg cvltvre of new york haunted. since 2009, drvg cvltvre has been working on his own blend of dystopian acid, no wave, and experimental house. respected in the international underground for his groundbreaking work in experimental techno as ra-x in the 90&#8242,,s on labels like bunker and kk records, drvg cvltvre comes from a diy punk background and opts for hard work rather than hollow pose. the 4-track ep for new york trax imports is an accurate representation of his style: dark and melancholic, but also uncompromisingly intense.

next up on dabj, hissman aka fabio monesi is an artist we have been massive fans of since we started playing nobodys talking which featured on our 2014 dabj bbc radio 1 essential mix a few years back. through his labels hardmoon and wilson records, he has brought some of the freshest jams to our ears in quite some time. for his first outing on dabj, shit gets real. masterfully crafted mechanized, rough, tough techno belters in that inimitable hissmanstyle... dont sleep on this.

after moving from london to berlin cromby is back on tenderpark with his second ep for the vinyl label. the young man recreates our love for deep house with two sample-based tracks which showcase his ever advancing skills with the old school akai sampler mpc 2000 xl as well as his cool understanding of mixing haunting melodies with gripping groove patterns. the remix on the flip side comes from hip-hop super producer gone house lover hodini who has collaborated with the talented bass player chez kerim for this funky workout. the cover image shot by achim valbracht is the start of a new artwork series developed by tenderpark art director till sperrle which revolves around critique of investor-driven architechture that has been dominating berlin for several decades now. the speciously precious and glittering image displays a normalised and globally standardised kind of beauty but at the same time reveals a strong sense of loneliness. as always both the mastering and as well as the lacquer cut of this record have been carefully executed by vinyl sound mastermind helmut erler at dubplates & mastering.

after the reception of “battle anybody” from luminaries like dj premier (#19 on his best of 2013 picks), dj evil dee, dj eclipse and more, dawhud and ace-one started working on a proper follow up to their emceeing anthem. one track turned into an ep which then quickly turned into a full length project. the project... d&g (david & goliath) - “the scepter & the sword” the concept for the group simply came from dawhud’s name (david in arabic) and ace-one, who was in the midst of fnishing up his “rapmonster” series. those two elements and the sheer chest pounding vibe of their prior track led to the creation of “david & goliath”. epic, biblical, and loaded with imagery that paints what the duo are trying to convey in just a name. produced entirely by dawhud, the duo trade verses over his landscapes to join forces and reign together. from the opening battle cry of “something’s coming” to the closing of their p-p-p-p-p-premier approved track, “the scepter & the sword” is a rap odyssey. assisting the duo on this legendary journey are emcees like masta ace, rock (from heltah skeltah), sadat x, kokane and pacewon alongside longtime friends/emcees joe harvey, jo and otomatik. with a title like “david & goliath”… legends should be involved. something’s coming…

next up on aus music is the welcome return of a good friend and label regular - the ever ascendant marquis hawkes. having released 4 eps on aus thus far, he makes his return in the form of a blazing, floor-focused 2 track ep which sits neatly with previous outings on the label. ‘the basement is burning’ takes it’s name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in hawkes’ home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a 5th floor balcony. having ensured the safety of his family, he made a dash across berlin to make a 10am live show, a few days later with the power back on ‘the basement is burning’ was born. the title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armoured with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. bursting synths are introduced before ducking strings chords bring the track to an ecstatic conclusion. ‘tower block boogie’ then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.
